Story

Gameplay
As in a traditional RPG, Borderlands is built around the continual leveling of characters as they delve into quests. These quests include both story-driven adventures and side quests that offer players rewards such as items exclusive to quest completion and/or forward movement of the story. Players can look forward to action set in both single player and multiplayer modes–including co-op play–as well as vehicular combat, literally thousands of different types of weapons that change each time you play and randomly generated maps and map features.

Story
In the year 2062, humanity found itself on the brink of extinction. Gameplay
Command & Conquer is a real-time strategy gaming franchise, and Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is no exception. Players assume color-coated versions of the GDI or Nod factions and uncover segments of the map, where they must manage Tiberium and other resources in their possession or that they they mine or commandeer in the field. Other factions occur in the game, but are not playable, and different single player campaigns are available to players depending on which of the two factions are chosen. The energy that Tiberium crystals possess is used in the manufacture and upgrading of mining and combat units, weapons and support infrastructure in preparation for impending conflicts with other players on the same map that are doing the same. Each faction has its own distinct unit types, both land and air based, which although unique, are overall more or less balanced against those of opposing faction. In addition, certain units can be captured on the battlefield and used to supplement your arsenal. The overarching task though is to combine the right number and type of units with the right battlefield strategy for the conflict and terrain at hand.

Historically, C&C matches have been won by completely eliminating all enemy units that stand against you. Although there is certainly plenty of this within Tiberian Twilight, the game also is different in that players need not eliminate all enemy units, instead capturing control nodes throughout the game and holding them for a minimum amount of time. Doing so leads to earning enough points to win the match. Tiberian Twilight also differs from earlier games in the series with the addition of certain RPG game elements. Players overall orientation within their chosen faction is class based, with units falling generally in offensive, defensive or support classes depending on your play style. These units can be upgraded with experience points, which are gained through success against enemy units, with more advanced enemy units earning the conquering player more points, and thus potential unit upgrade opportunity.

Gameplay

As in a traditional RPG, Borderlands is built around the continual leveling of characters as they delve into quests. These quests include both story-driven adventures and side quests that offer players rewards such as items exclusive to quest completion and/or forward movement of the story. PREFACE

When I decided to replace my old standard Dell keyboard, I opted for an illuminated one. I settled on a choice of three, reading virtually every rating on the Cyborg P17UK and Logitech’s G11 & G15 on several sites before finally selecting the Cyborg.

I use the Windows XP- 32 bit operating system. I am not a gamer anymore; but am an extensive user of productivity software and developer of sophisticated macros including using VBA and SQL, especially for MircoSoft Office products. I also use PhotoShop & Corel Draw as well as some audio editing software, and do some web programming with Java and HTML. I am not a touch typist, but no slouch either, and I do a lot of writing. So understand, my recommendations are from this perspective.

RECOMMENDATION:

In my opinion (IMAO), this is a sturdy, high quality board. Like many, I was torn between the G11, G15 and the Cyborg. All are roughly equivalent and, depending upon your needs, will work well. I chose the Cyborg because I didn’t need or think the G15?s LCD panel useful, and perhaps a bit fragile; and because I’m not impressed with Logitech- ok equipment, but not certainly top-of-the-line. However, you should be satisfied with any of these. I also found the non-gaming boards seem not to be as durable as these three.

The four star rating is based on poor documentation, navigation on the website is somewhat confusing, other reviewers report support problems with Saitek (although I have found this not to be the case), and because I think many will find installation and programming a bit sophisticated- not hard for anyone with any savvy at all, but certainly more difficult than it needs to be. Note Saitek has updated their on-line manuals and software which makes installation much easier and less time consuming.

Quality of Construction: (Excellent)- The Cyborg is made of the same extruded plastic material as most, if not all keyboards. The WASD and arrow keys are aluminum clad for extra wear, and all keys are laser etched.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Installation isn’t simple; there will most likely be issues and it will take some time. Note this can be made substantially easier by following the advice provided below.

This keyboard uses a USB port; the on-board port will use a second (but since its pass-through, there’s only a net use of 1 port)

The USB version is whatever it is plugged into on the computer (most probably 2.0); Logitech’s G11/15 uses 1.1 (much slower)

Keyboard is wider (21.5?) than the 18? `standard’; you may want to check your physical space.

Keys are a bit smaller than standard- most notably the Escape & “F” keys-but I don’t find this to be a problem at all.

The keys are quiet but not silent- see advice below if you want or need key-click.

This may be a newer model as I have noticed some different features than those listed or mentioned by other reviewers. Certainly the programming software has been updated, much easier to use, and includes a new SST programming help manual.

There are two types of software used by the keyboard: Drivers (there are 4), and the programming software (Optional- used to program the “C” keys).

Programming the “C” keys requires a little knowledge of macros.

The “C” keys are keystroke not, strictly speaking, command programmable keys. However, you can program hotkeys and emulate commands in many cases.

ADVICE:

If you follow the advice below, you should have few problems in installing and using the Cyborg keyboard, at least on the Windows XP Pro 32 bit operating platform.

After ordering the Cyborg, register for the Saitek online forum [..]. The process will take a day or so as Saitek checks for a legitimate e-mail address and sends you an activation code (they report having porn spamming problems). Registration is free.

Once registered on the forum, download the following:

Updated drivers and software [Beta 2]([..]). Do not install, just save for future installation once you receive your keyboard. Install this updated software instead of that which comes with the keyboard.

The user manual that will come with your new keyboard[..]

A better user manual albeit for a different keyboard (but the setup is essentially the same) that includes a troubleshooting section. [..]

When installing the keyboard & software:

Disable USB Power Management- refer to [..], Post #1, Solution 1.

Make sure you logged on with administrator’s rights or the drivers/software will not install (the manual omits this).

Follow the installation guide precisely- ALL drivers are required (including the “magic mouse”), but you don’t need the software unless you are going to program the “C” keys (installation will give you a choice).

Use the newer (Beta 2) version of the software/drivers downloaded previously instead of the CD that comes with the keyboard.

I would advise against a USB/PS2 (keyboard port) adapter since the keyboard needs power from the USB port to operate.

If you want to program commands, download a hotkey manager utility such as EvoKey. I find HotKey Manager from [..] simpler to use (both are freeware).

If the keys are too quiet for you, install a utility that will give them a sound such as Noisy Keyboard (freeware from:[..])

You could use this from your lap, but I’d remove the wrist pad.

RESPONSE TO CRITICISMS:

Be sure to remove the protective clear plastic covering over the touchpad and “C” keys. This isn’t mentioned in the manual but should be.

Slippery keys: I haven’t noticed my fingers slipping off the keys.

Shoddy workmanship: Sounds to me like a quality control (QC) issue; especially when a customer receives 2 “B” keys and no “V”. I have had no hardware issues.

No blue or white light: Mine has white light; is it a deal breaker that there’s no blue hue?

Illumination not bright enough: I find it plenty bright, especially on white and light amber. Dark red isn’t as intense (but looks meaner), but then it’s a dark color. Also, I have four intensities.

Key Wear: This has been reported in several different places; but the keys are extruded plastic and shouldn’t wear through any more than wearing the letters off a regular key. One reviewer reports the keys were reengineered in response to this difficulty (I haven’t experienced this).

Only 12 Programmable Keys and 36 possible functions: Well, actually only 33 but I can’t imagine anyone needing more than that. If you really need 18 physical keys & 54 functions, get the other keyboard.

Gapped Wrist Pad: I don’t know why Saitek designed a gap in their wrist pad, but its no problem for me; probably because I learned typing the old way (wrists-up).

Cord to short: its a standard size cord- you could get a USB extension if that’s a problem.

Too Pricy: maybe, but its within market prices of competitors and you know this up front.

Q4 is really a long awaited continuation of the very successful Q2. Those of us that enjoyed Q2 immensely, and were very disappointed that Q3 had no single player, have been waiting long for another chance to reek havoc on the Strogg homeworld!

The look of Q4 is a perfect blend of old and new. The designers did an exceptional job in designing the new game to be a fresh experience, while maintaining the essence from Q2. The same dark industrial look of Q2 is brilliantly carried into Q4. The Strogg supply boxes we have all come to know, and hide behind, are just one of the environmental elements carried over. Deadly red laser beams, massive hatches, pipes and bridges. The feel of being in the belly of an industrial war machine is palpable! The overall scale of the single player world is massive! Though most of the fighting takes place in dark, some times cramped interiors, there are many good sized areas and even a few battles that take place in large outdoor areas (With heavy war machines). Be warned though, if you hate elevators, there are many, many, many lifts!! I would give Q4 a 10 out of 10 for blending the old with the new to create a truly immersive single player environment!

Compared to other games like Halo (Not really fair) about a 7 out of 10.

As for the single player path, again this is a continuation and improvement on Q2. I have always been partial to the mission based single player path. Q2 was great in this respect, with the computer constantly updating you as to your next mission. Q4 is a quantum leap in this area! Yes you could get annoyed with the “Mouse in the maze” way that you are directed down the path, i.e. there is only really one way to go at any one time. But this is nicely tempered by the awesome effects and animations! Your fellow soldiers are very animated (Pun intended) it is worth hanging out when you get near them, they talk freely about the Strogg, how the war is going, and many have humorous personalities, like Strauss who is so full of himself, that to listen to him you would get the impression he is single handedly winning the war!! Most of the missions were interesting, and made for great plot driven action!!

The story is dark, grim and gory!! In some ways more so than the original! The Stroggification of Kane went on (Imho) about 30 seconds too long! I mean we get the idea how horribly he was mangled by the Strogg, and just when you think they have finished making this point, they jab, stab and slice him up some more!!!.maybe I am getting old? But I think they could have toned it down a bit.

The Strogg menagerie is again a perfect blend of old and new. Several of the old Strogg reappear in more deadly forms. All of them look superb, with this new 3D engine!! The Stroggified marine looks the most like a “Borg”, though it pays to remember that the Strogg came first!!! The Berserker, the dude with a long spike instead of a right hand and a mace for a left hand, is quick and deadly in tight spaces!! One of the creatures that truly freaked my @#$% out in Q2, when ever I ran into one I would start muttering “@#$%!! @#$%!! @#$%!!” because they would gallop up to you and start whacking you with that wicked metal cable/tongue, making that horrible sound!! **Shiver** This creature has been replaced by a bigger, burlier dog-thing. This creature, called a Teleport Dropper, inspires a different kind of terror..it comes with in range, and starts shaking it’s back like a wet dog. The effect is that it starts popping teleport balls onto the floor, which summon many Strogg freaks!!! The beast itself is fairly tough, so the longer it takes for you to kill it, the more Strogg freaks you will have to contend with!! The most wicked “Upgrade” goes to the Iron Maidens, they are vastly more wicked than in Q2. Though they are not physically that tough, they can teleport! But the really wicked thing about them is that they have a screaming

“Banshee” wail that totally messes with your ears and brain!!!! If you get caught in the blast radius of one of the audio blasts, you lose your hearing (Temp) and your vision begins to blur/waver!!! It is best to keep out of their range, until the right moment!! Including some small “Boss’s” there are some 17 different Strogg types you will encounter, they are all very cool looking and wicked in their own way. The worst scenarios are when you have to battle 6 or more types at once!!! The most devastating Strogg unit (Boss’s aside) is the Tactical Strogg Elite Soldier. These guys are what Kane get’s turned into. The AI really works with these guys!!! They move in tight squads, use a variety of weapons and have deadly accuracy, imagine fighting yourself X 6!!! After dying horribly many times, I came to this conclusion, snipe as many with the railgun from a distance as possible, when one rushes you, switch to shotgun!!

The weapons are also a best of old and new blend!! All the favorites are here, sans the BFG, which has been replaced by an even cooler Dark Matter Gun!!! Which shoots mini-black holes!!! The immediate noticeable difference of the weapons is due to new gaming technology, they look cooler and sound awesome!! The game difference is accuracy and tech upgrades! As the game advances along, you run into marine techs who offer to upgrade your weapons (One at a time) and increase the rate of fire and or clip capacity!!! The game, for the most part, provides plenty of weapons and ammo as you go. I have always been a hoarder of ammo, and will usually stick to simple weapons like the shotgun and machine gun, saving my rockets, grenades and dark matter charges for the “Big stuff”. Grenades for the grenade launcher were the only ammo I felt disappointed in a lack of!. I love the grenade launcher!!!

One major difference between Q2 and Q4 is the arcade like segments that break up the game, in spots. Over all I think this is a great addition, and gets you out of the killing things in dark corridors rut.. I was a little annoyed at the “You are locked into the vehicle for the duration” method of control, but that’s because I have been spoiled by Halo’s continuous seamless environment, where you can slip in and out of vehicles at will. That small criticism aside, I think it is a refreshing change to the killing things in dark corridors rut!! And adds a much appreciated dimension to an already wicked cool game!!

I have not played Doom3, but I have heard that the, “something just dropped in behind me” thing get’s really old, quick. Q4 does not pull those kind of “Cheap shots”. In this regard it is virtually identical to Q2. The old, step into a room, activate the charging screaming ghouls, then step back and blast away!!…same as it ever was….and that’s okay!! I prefer that to the flanking BS, that even Halo would pull on you!! That having been said, you do get in larger rooms/areas where you are being shot at from multiple levels/directions.

Myst arrived just in time to take advantage of brand-new CD-ROM technology, and quickly became the number-one reason to buy a new computer. Myst and its sequel, Riven, featured beautiful and lonely landscapes, a strong and fascinating sense of pervading mystery, and puzzles both fiendish and clever. Players navigated through the games by clicking on points of interest, and solved puzzles by paying careful attention to the lush graphics and haunting sounds of the environment. Myst III: Exile proudly continues and even advances that tradition.

Myst‘s ongoing story line is as convoluted as it is fantastic. Central to the story is the mysterious civilization of the D’ni, which creates entire worlds by writing books. Other books are used to link the D’ni worlds together. Myst trapped the player in a series of interconnected worlds, and challenged the player to puzzle through the ramblings of two mad brothers in order to free Atrus, their imprisoned father. Riven revealed more of the history of the D’ni, and sent the player to the unstable world of Riven in order to rescue Atrus’s wife.

Myst III: Exile concerns Atrus’s earnest attempt at creating a new world. He hopes this world will mark the rebirth of the D’ni, but before he finishes his book, a thief (portrayed in the game by actor Brad Dourif) breaks into his laboratory and mucks things up. You have to track this thief through worlds written by Atrus in his earlier years. Within each world you must right the wrongs the thief has created, all the while uncovering a deeper mystery surrounding his relationship to Atrus and his troublesome children. Prior experience with Myst and Riven isn’t necessary for this third excursion, but familiarity with Myst‘s point-and-click gameplay and its often infuriating puzzle logic helps.

New to the game is a full 3-D landscape, which replaces the static prerendered artwork of the previous games. The gorgeous new graphics allow you to quickly pan and scan your way through an area, looking for puzzles and action spots with the hand cursor. The puzzles have been improved so that you can now see changes to the environment immediately after you solve one, rather than simply moving on to the next picture. Still, the puzzles are often wickedly difficult and may prove frustrating to new players.

The environment is the true star of the game, and is sure to enchant players of all stripes. As before, the music and artwork are topnotch and immersing, and the experience is not easily forgotten. Myst fans of old will be delighted with this new installment, and those new to the series will be enchanted, provided they are willing to spend time on the puzzles, enjoy the scenery, and let the game carry them away. –Andrew S. The Plot

Game Environments
Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in GTA IV are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cutouts, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko’s interaction with them.

Gameplay
Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in GTA IV. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay.

Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for GTA IV:

Multiplayer
Give Niko a rest and create your own multiplayer “hero.” GTA has added multiplayer modes allowing you to take your creation out to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Two words: Bugs and SecuROM v7.

I’d have a lot more fun with this game if I was actually playing it. But as usual, this EP shipped with a bunch of gameplay bugs and also an ugly, potentially dangerous form of copy protection by Sony called SecuROM.

A Brief on Bugs:

- Game shipped w/a programming error that created Tour Guide after Tour Guide, unchecked. Too many character files in a sim ‘hood means too many opportunities for them to corrupt and your ‘hood to go boom. A third party fansite had a fix before EA did (like two WEEKS before EA did). The fansite fix didn’t weigh in at a whopping 15 MB like the EA patch did either, considering the EA patch fixed very few things and another will be needed. Must be fun to download on dialup.

- One of the game’s Twikii Island locations has an object issue that slows gameplay to an excruciating crawl. A prebuilt lodge in the woodsy vacation hood has no grill or phones, so sims can’t cook or order room service and must leave to eat. A secret location in the Twikii hood is so poorly constructed it grinds the game to a halt. Stuff like this should’ve been caught in testing…BAHAHA! Like they test this game, ugh. Poor devs. I do believe they want to make a great game, but the time constraints put on them by EA management makes them churn out bugfest after bugfest.

- Funky installation errors told some people that they had to uninstall previous EPs to install BV, so they followed that advice and TADA! Doing so wiped out their entire saved games folder. Sure, you should always back up before installation, but that shouldn’t happening in the first place.

- This EP has a new ‘feature’ called the Launcher, which will connect to the internet to inform you of patches or other EA spam before you get to play. Many people, myself included, found that 1) this game takes long enough to get running, extending the misery for spam isn’t appreciated and 2) bypassing the Launcher via running directly from the SP6.exe made for much smoother gameplay, possibly because the game isn’t still trying to connect to the web. *shrug* I don’t know, but it did make a difference for me; the game was hitching and lagging the few times I used the Launcher, but was much smoother when I bypassed it and yanked my wireless router cord out of my computer when I played. EA denies the game ‘phones home’, but denial is their standard fallback position, and it might have more to do with the ugly new noose they’ve decided to put around our necks w/this EP…

Say ‘No’ to SecuROM:

SecuROM is Digital Rights Management (DRM) or copy protection software. EA doesn’t want you copying the games you buy from them. ‘Kay. *cough*violatesFairUseAct*cough* But SecuROM v7 is DESIGNED to disable software, like CD/DVD burner drivers or emulation software, that it thinks might be used for ‘pirating’. DaemonTools, Alcohol 120, and the like.

Oh, and factory installed versions of Nero and Roxio too…?

Yes. Seems the version of Securom shipped w/BV wasn’t updated enough; anything it doesn’t recognize as kosher gets shut down, so if you’ve got a newer comp, it could very well affect you most of all. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but that it’s happening at all is unconscionable. Because of a game, some people are having drives REPLACED because they don’t know about Securom’s effects, reformatting their computers, finding their antivirus settings altered, and in the biggest of ironies, some are searching the web for ways to strip their comps of Securom and use a NoCD cracked .exe to run their purchased games, as they cannot otherwise.

Securom is PIMPING piracy! More simmers than ever are now aware of how to go about it, out of fear of what Securom might do or has done to their own or other people’s comps.

In the US, none of the boxes came with any warning whatsoever that the DRM used might cause these kinds of issues. If you install BV, Securom installs with it, and the ‘removal’ tool from Sony EA was forced to post on the official site (after being harangued into investigating several weeks after BV’s release) DOES NOT fully remove Securom from your comp. You’re stuck with it, and due to it’s very rootkit like behavior, it is a total bear to completely remove. Once you or a tech remove it, w/the Sony tool or otherwise, you cannot play the game you paid for. And problems Securom can create with driver software may or may NOT go away when you remove it, either.

BV has been out 3 months and EA has still not addressed this very serious issue in any satisfactory way. In fact, EA is blithely sticking with Securom for all its future games (it’s in a lot of them already). People are contacting the FTC, states attorney generals, and the BBB about this issue.

Some who aren’t suffering make light of it, blame people’s comps, or call others hysterics, but when something that came unannounced with a game starts dictating what you can or cannot do with your comp outside of the game, it’s not hysteria, it’s major. It’s affecting PAYING CUSTOMERS, people who gladly pay for every title they play and would never condone nor be involved with software piracy, and worst of all – Securom is a total failure as copy protection. NoCD cracks (ie. Securom-less game .exes) were available within 24 hrs of the game’s release.

Anyone can understand a publisher’s need to protect their product, but not at the expense of people’s personal property, time, money, aggravation, livelihoods, etc. If this is the wave of the future, I want no part of it – we own our computers, not EA or Sony.

***If you are responsible for the welfare of your comp, you need to seriously evaluate the possible damaging consequences of installing this EP or any other game that uses such invasive and possibly debilitating copy protection software.***

EA has a Securom board on their official TS2 site, look it over, draw your own conclusions.

Check out the Bioshock, Neverwinter Nights 2, Command and Conquer, and Supreme Commander game boards too. It’s not just BV that has these issues; those games all use Securom too and have similar problems.

Do I have anything nice to say about BV? The water’s pretty, and walking to lots is cool. But my simming buzz is pretty dead right now from game bugs – and worrying about the future of my computer’s functionality if I decide to upgrade a component or add a peripheral that Securom decides it doesn’t like.

I wish I’d never installed it.

Cities XL 2011 Review

So after a year since CXL was released by Monte Cristo, Focus Interactive releases Cities XL 2011. They promised some changes and a transit system complete with buses and trains (subway and elevated). The next generation city simulator gets a makeover with added features. Unfortunately, some bugs from the original CXL and some new ones have marred it to the point where the forums are lit up by frustrated people. Focus has been quiet although they did fix a bug for steam users. If you are familiar with Cities XL, buying the game online has your serial number emailed to you; and online activation. Previously, Monte Cristo told me that I can load CXL on as many computers as I like, no limits. Focus doesn’t mention it. I heard that Starforce DRM is on it but I didn’t see it while going through installation. I’ve had Starforce before and it usually says, “loading Starforce.” If anyone who has this, had seen, it, I’ll change this sentence, but like I said, I didn’t see it. I went through the files as well. For people who had CXL, you have the opportunity to buy CXL 2011 for half the price if you have your serial number for CXL. If you forgot it or lost it, emailing Focus Interactive Tech support is the way to go..You have to provide your username, password and email you used to sign up CXL.

There is no online aspect of the game. Previously in CXL, you had the planet mode. online mode is completely left out in CXL 2011. You can trade with each of YOUR cities or Don Madoff but no anyone else.

The same premise is back. You can build a city on the CXL “planet,” picking a spot with different physical features ie. peninsula, volcano, lakes on a plain, fertile plains, tropical island, and more. Also, keep in mind what type of resources that each “plot” has ie. oil, water, holiday, water, farm. You give your city a name and go through a quick tutorial of where to place your first road, city hall, and early power/garbage zone. The tutorials at the very beginning (before you pick where you want your city) are good enough to give you the know-how of the basics.

Many people are having problems installing the game, starting, it and playing it. Steam was the worst but I think a patch, fixed that. I haven’t had this trouble at all. Also, people have been reporting slow frame rates early in the game. Usually the frame rates decrease when you have a sizable city.

The graphics are gorgeous. The people in CXL ’11 are just like the original; not very realistic but better than others. There is no comparison concerning graphics between Simcity 4, CXL ’11, and Simcity Societies. This one is by far better!

One thing new, you can tax different types of zones. In Industry, you can tax separately; heavy industry, office buildings, high tech etc. In CXL ’11 you have industry, commercial, and residential zones. Building have been added as well as packs ie: coastal homes on stilts, Asian style homes, European….

One of the best things done in CXL is the idea of allowing us to create our own bus lines; up to 20 lines. The maps show your worst traffic and how your lines are being utilized. You can;t go crazy or else you will go bankrupt quickly. The best thing is that the bus stops are placed along your roads; they don’t take up a tile as in Simcity 4. Perfect, since every bit of real estate is needed. The Metro (train) works the same way as the buses except, the station needs to be placed near a road. you can create many lines depending on the size of your depot (just like the buses; small or large). What is great, concerning the Metro, you can run your lines along side or under your lines placed already. The belief in the CXL universe is that the tracks go under the track already placed. A roundabout was added in the roads section however, it really has no use at this time. Expressways are now highways. One bug that had carried over from the earlier CXL is the way traffic moves. On a multiple lane road, cars in the left lane turn right and cars in the right lane turn left (besides going straight). The traffic lights, again are not animated. These 2 things too me are glowing issues especially since we are in 2010 and this game pushes city building realism. I’m also a realism nut

For those looking to buy Cities XL 2011, just be on the lookout concerning the bugs; there seems to be more in this one that the previous one. In the previous Cities Xl, Ive only experienced one lockup but in this one, none. Like I said, I haven’t come across the crashing and error messages that others have gotten. Most people reporting the issues have decent systems. Check the forum. You need a decent video card because this one will wake up your video card. The game was rumored to have multi-core support but it doesn’t.

All and all, what is surprising is the amount of bugs being reported. If you don’t experience the bugs, you will enjoy this game. It really requires you to thin what type of city you want to build, where, and how big. You have to keep an eye on your finances. In Simcity 4, it was easy to zone and expand quickly without any problems. In CXL ’11, you can’t expand quickly. When things become available, sometimes it’s best not to immediately place them because it will put you in the red quickly. The passage of time in CXL ’11 is by cycle, not month/day/year like in Simcity. I happen to like CXL way of passage of time. By default, the day/night cycle is turned off, but you can change it. The city looks nice as night as well as the moon and sun during the day. The water graphic is spectacular. I will be adding to this review the more I play it. I’ve been playing it since it was released last week. You can read this review and my CXL (original) review to get a sense of this game. There is only one edition of this game unlike the previous one which had the original and limited editions. I have this game a score of just under 4, I would give this one about 3.9. If they fix the bugs and support this game (Focus is very very quiet), I would give it a 4. After a month, Focus is probably looking to see the numbers and going over the next course of action but like I said, they are extremely quiet. Hopefully it won’t be abandoned.

UPDATE

I have to say that I continue to be impressed with this game as I play it more. I may have under appreciated the graphics, I find that the use of the satellite imagery to be a great thing and probably much cheaper than having designers start from scratch in a fictional world like Ace Combat series.

I think the Cape Canaveral map is cool but while playing I was reminded of an Ace Combat 4 map of basically the same thing, the Magellan Straits, Caribbean, Afghanistan, Middle East(Probably Arabia), Central African, and all of the 17 maps are really great. Another thing is that in the first mission, Juarez, Mexico, you support the Ghosts in the earlier GRAW games which is a nice tie in and I’m pretty sure you support the Rainbow Team from Rainbow Six Vegas in the Nevada map. Other noteworthy planes are the YF-23 that lost out to the F-22, the XA-20 Razorback which I’ve never seen anywhere else, X-29 demostrator, Harrier, EA-6B Prowler, Mig-21, A12 Wing, and other curiosities.

Something I wish was included was fully destructible environments, your missiles splash in the water but don’t effect buildings or trees. Another thing that would be great would be add-on maps or a map editor in which we could use google earth imagery or some kind of expansion packs for helos, gunships or even prop planes. All in all I have to update my rating to an 8.5, since I’m a non-console player I can’t compare it to the latest Ace Combat but I’m sure it more than holds it’s own against it.

GENERAL THOUGHTS

Yeah this is a fun game that reminds me very much of the Ace Combat series for consoles of which I have not played since I became a PC only gamer. It’s not a sim by any means but if you want that get the Microsoft flight sim or any of the other ones available on PC. I have to disagree with IGN’s review of 6.7, the author clearly misses a lot of the details, such as the ability to release flares when an enemy has you locked, the changeable paint schemes and others, and has an animosity towards this game that is not called for, for me this game is between a 7.5 to 8.5 depending on how much you like the arcade modern jet combat game. I would say for me it’s an 8 and that’s 4/5 stars here.

The novelty of this game is really what is cool. I’m not much of a sim player and outside of that ,at least for PC gamers, there’s not much in the way of cool jet fighter games. Who wouldn’t want to fly one of these technological masterpieces but not have to worry about all the details that the real guys do? Not to mention the real-world locations, which is not offered in the Ace Combat series. My review is from a single player offline only POV and not really using any of the bots you can command, as it didn’t really make much of a difference but I have to say I have not played this game to the end yet.

STORY

Well it’s a pretty minimal story, and thanks for that I don’t really follow that much in a game like this or racing games either. I still remember the silly and embarrassing Ace Combat 4 story although I did like the art style involved. This has just an ex-air force pilot(YOU) switching to a private security company that has no loyalties other than money and when it takes a contract to attack your country you rebel. That’s all I’ll get into as you can get a summary from the official reviews elsewhere. It takes place in 2014, standard Tom Clancy near future time setting.

GAMEPLAY

Well like I said this is an arcade game, meaning you can do about anything with your jet and as long as it doesn’t hit the ground you will not be punished for it with things like flameouts or losing control. The combat is non-realistic as well, when you are under attack you can use flares and wildly maneuver your plane in any which way and it always works. Also it’s a little too easy on normal difficulty, I had no trouble killing Su-27?s, Apaches and various ground targets in the older FA-18 Hornet; I would expect and Su-27 to be a bigger challenge.

Also there is no need to worry about fuel as it’s not even on your HUD as well as you being armed with nearly 200 missiles for every mission, even AceCombat5 had limitations that made the game a bit more strategic and challenging. Missiles can’t be instantly fired in succession there’s a bit of a waiting period after firing 2 to fire more. Your cannon/machinegun is unlimited as well but can’t be used continuously as it get’s hot and is a primarily burst weapon. The cluster bombs are awesome as well as the conventional large ground bombs with the usual HUD visualizations of trajectory and spread area.

That said it is kind of interesting to turn off the “assistance(HUD Forward View)” with left-ctrl and switch to a side view of the plane you are flying instead of the assisted normal swingman view, it’s a little weird and I have not tried any missions with it on. There are no landing sequences to worry about either.

Another thing is if you hold down the missile fire button the camera will switch to the missiles view which is pretty cool. There’s also something called the ERS which takes you step by step to an enemy kill, it makes it way too easy and really should be used for training purposes only.

TECHNICAL

I had no problems with the installation on Windows XP and the game picked up my Logitech Rumblepad 2 when I went into the controls settings and specified the joystick. The default settings were fine for my joypad. I have a midrange system and had no trouble getting 1680×1050 with all high. I’m using Q6600@2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 8800GT512.

GRAPHICS

These were standard to good, I would say nothing mind blowing but nothing too bad either. The jets all look like their real world counterparts and the real world cities look accurate since they are supposedly based on real satellite images, although they are limited in area. I wasn’t hugely impressed with the Los Angeles area, being a resident of LA, I didn’t see the Hollywood sign or other things other than the main downtown section. Also the Southern Nevada part is OK I suppose, mainly empty desert and what I assume to be Lake Mead, I used to live in S. Nevada and didn’t really see much that was recognizable, I don’t remember there being a Hoover Dam but I could be wrong.

The maps that stood out were Chicago, DC, Tokyo, and Rio. There’s about 17 maps. The stars are really the planes as they should be.

I liked the water on the screen effect you get when going through rain. The explosions are standard this generation to look at but the explosions from the ground battles are pretty neat if nothing special. The way to really get a good view of the plane and surroundings, if not really all that conducive to play, is to use the assistance off setting using left-control. In summary the graphics are good this generation, that’s not really a problem though since it’s just cool to have a game like this finally for PC gamers.

SOUND

Pretty standard, everything sounds right from what I know. I turn off/down the music since I don’t thing most fighter pilots are allowed that sort of thing in combat anyways and I don’t need it to give me a better gaming experience as this is only a game. Some may like the drama enhancement you get from it but I’m not one of them. The explosions are pretty nice, you would of course never hear them like that in a jet but it’s a game!

EXTRAS

One thing you should go and get from a third party is a plane and mission unlocker. There are massive amounts of real world planes here and I want access to them immediately, like the SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, F16, F15,F14,all the migs, Mirage, Typhoon, A10 Warthog, F35 Joint Strike FIghter, F4, older 60?s planes, awesome new looking Russian planes, experimental planes, F22 Raptor, next next generation USA planes, Jaguar, F-111, and probably others I’ve missed. As well as different loadouts of missiles for each planes specialties like precision bombs, ground target bombs, cluster bombs, air to air bombs or a mix of them particular to each plane and it’s capabilities. I would guess there are at least 50 planes here not counting the variants of the same plane. My favorites include the F-15 Active, F-117, A10, SR-71, etc.

There are no helos,prop planes, gunships or heavy bombers here, this is all jets, but you do take down Apaches and other helos in missions. The planes also have at least one more selectable paint job, like the F-117 Nighthawk has the standard Stealth Black and also has the Camo pattern for daytime missions. Also there are multiple variants of each jet like the standard F16 and the upgraded F16c which I believe is the non-export USA edition or exported to close allies only as well as variants with different selectable paint jobs.

All of this stuff is unlockable only after finishing in the different difficulty settings or getting better ratings after missions or some online only stuff but who wants to do all that, search for the Hawx unlock on google and have a blast right away!

CLOSING

I recommend this to anyone who likes arcade flying games and doesn’t want too much of a challenge. This game is great if you like jets in general and want the chance to fly them in a game with a wide variety. It’s not a must have game, unless you are a lover of modern jets, but if you are looking for more variety in your game collection get this one. Of course this is not a fifty dollar game by any means so get it used when the prices come down, I’d say new in the forty dollar range. I’d say if you have the latest Burnout PC game or miss/enjoy the Ace Combat console series and seek a breather from the FPS’s, RPG’s, MMOG’s and other dominant game types, this would fit nicely into your collection.

Story

Gameplay

Where most first person shooters rely on relentless action to engage their players, Call of Pripyat goes in an entirely different direction: allowing for long moments of silence amidst a desolate landscape and an ever changing vista. It’s the stuff grade-A horror movies are made of. The haunting atmosphere tries the nerves of even the most seasoned gamer. The environment is dynamic: day and night alternate and are filled with thunderstorms and sunshine. Deadly radioactive emissions occur periodically but unpredictably, killing anyone and anything who cannot find shelter.

Players will live the life of undercover agent Major Degtyarev, an experienced stalker, as he eats, drinks, and sleeps in the Zone. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CoP is non-linear gameplay at its best, as the player seeks allies and makes enemies in the treacherous and fragile balance between rival factions, bandits, and mercenaries. Friendships are only temporary in the Zone, where a bullet that was supposed to protect can become the instrument of death in a matter of split seconds.

Multiplayer modes provide endless enjoyment as players compete against each other individually and in teams to increase their rank and money. Climbing up the ladder is the way to get access to the most devastating weapons. A player’s success depends on his proficiency in warfare and his ability to help his team.
